Johannes Steinfort, holocaust survivor of Netherlands. My father was in the hotel business, my family was catholic. I first met the brothers of the Jehovah’s Witness 1936, pioneers from Germany, full time bible educators. When the war broke out I was arrested temporarily, I was arrested a second time in 1942 and put in a concentration camp. Many Witnesses were arrested at the same time. In the next cell of the jail was the branch overseer Arthur Winkler. The gestapo commissioned him to write a book about the Witnesses. He wrote everything and gave me a copy to my cell and we worked together what should be written. Brother Winkler also made the daily bible text for other prisoners to read for spiritual nourishment. He passed a small note every day. We were transported to Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Berlin, there were 28,000 prisoners. We had bible meetings every Sunday in our barracks. The bombings over Berlin increased and we were brought to clean up the mess, many places were flattened. April 1945 the camp was evacuated. From one side the Russian army approached, from the other side came the American army. We Jehovah’s witness left together with a big wagon stacked with SS valuables. All of survived the death march, we met the American army at Mecklenburg, we were liberated.
