Franz Suchomel testimony summary

Franz Suchomel was born in south Germany, in the region where the Rhine river and Danube river begin cascading from the Alps mountain range. He was 35 years old when he arrived at Treblinka extermination camp in East Poland. In the length of time of 1 year he oversaw 1 million European civilians executed here. He was arrested in 1963 and released from prison in 1967. He was secretly recorded in video giving his testimony of his time at Treblinka extermination camp 1976. He passed away in 1979. During the 1 year that he was stationed as commandant of Treblinka it was “operating at its peak” because Warsaw ghetto was being emptied. 3 trains arrive each 2 days each carrying 5,000 people, all of whom were from Warsaw. Simultaneously Stalingrad campaign was taking place and the trains arrived from the fronts with prisoners of war in such bad conditions of 5,000 arrived 3,000 of them were dead the others were half-dead. The Waffen-SS Stormtroopers from the battle front the transports of prisoners arrive at least half were dead “stacked up here here here here”

There was a reception camp at the front. There was a ramp, the people were chased into the gas chambers. The gas chamber house had 3 small compartments originally for 100 people each. When the gas chamber iron bunker door opened “the people fell out like potatoes”. The smell was infernal, reeked terribly and noticeable for kilometers. When Franz arrives the new gas chambers are built, each holding 500 people. With the new gas chambers “the assembly line of death” could be done 3,000 people killed within 2 hours. 1 single motor had to service 3 gas chambers, death took 20 minutes. Men were first to be forced in women had to wait until the gas chamber was ready.

There was shooting also. The people were driven into a covered porch to undress and behind the building were long burning trenches where mostly women and children were executed with one gunshot to the back of the head. 1943 the order came, “women left and men right” and Franz left eastern Poland travelling hundreds of kilometers south with the Einsatzgruppen, the Stormtroopers, between the two mountain ranges of the Alps and the Carpathians to the shores of east Italy at the start of the German occupation of Italy.
