Jack Kagan testimony coupled with Gaza, a German holocaust survivor from Poland. The son of a saddlemaker, his whole town revolved around the synagogue and had 3 Jewish youth movements. He became a pioneer when world war two broke out. All of the Polish army were deliberately sent home on leave when the Germans invaded, the barracks were empty. The German army with 100,000 soldiers camped outside his town when they were making their way to the eastern front. Thousands of Russian prisoners of war from the Minsk pocket marched through in captivity dying of thirst along the march. The Germans selected labor from the Jewish men of the town which was half of the population of the town was Jewish. They executed his father and uncle with 5,000 other townsfolk, half of the Jewish population of the town was selected and massacred in mass graves outside of the town. He was 13 years old, he was registered for work. 1,000 Jews from a nearby town were brought to stay in their ghetto. Tradesmen were selected from among the Jewish ghetto of 6,000 people and he was among them. Of the 1,000 tradesmen 500 were selected for work and 500 were executed. The ghetto was sealed and they lived on bunks in the factory where they produced uniforms and clothing for the German army. Everyone was starving but the Jewish council made sure no one died of hunger. He helped his cousin escape in 1942. Other ghettos nearby were liquidated of the Jewish people. The SS selected in 1943 from the 500 living tradesmen and divided 250 to be executed of whom were his mother and sister. He himself then escaped through the tunnel they spent half a year digging with a group of others to join the Bielski partisans in the forest. June 1944 his town was liberated by the Red army and he went home with a group of partisans. They avoided remobilization with the Red army although other Bielski partisans did not and were killed on the front line in the liberation of Poland and Berlin.
