Holocaust world war 2 Survivor August Kowalczyk testimony coupled with real time historical testimony from Gaza holocaust world war 3
August Kowalczyk, holocaust survivor of Krakow, Poland. My
family are a long line of teachers, my father was school principle of a small
village. I was 18 years old I wanted to fight the Nazi. We heard partisans
units were being formed in the forest with the remnants of the Polish army, so
I set off to join them alongside a group 3 of whom were officers. Because of a
mishap with the chain of guides along the way we fell into the hands of the
Slovak gendarmerie who were collaborating with the Nazi and turned custody of
us to the Gestapo. The 3 officers of my group were shot, I was transported to
Auschwitz. I met a secret underground there between the women, Salesians and the
Seraphite nuns. Months later myself and other men in the Auschwitz underground
were caught and transferred to a sub-camp named Buna. We learned we were
sentenced to death and we organized to escape, with the coordination of the
underground, with help from outside organized by the Bielski brothers who led
the Jewish partisans. During the working hours when we were digging two dikes,
6 SS men with rifles stood guard over each trench. There were 3 and a half
hundred of us, there were 12 SS guards with rifles and 1 machine gun. When we
hear the whistle we have to hit the guard with shovels and everyone scatters
running in different directions. I was the only one who grabbed a shovel, no
one else helped me overpower the guards and I nearly lost my life but he
stopped paying attention to me to chase the others. I threw the shovel to the
ground and ran, tossing my shoes and clothes to stop any dogs from taking a scent
trail. The other half of the prisoners, the dike number two were supposed to do
the same as we had done when they hear the second whistle, they hit the guard
and scatter running into the woods. Not very far distance away in a grain field
I came to a group of young women working for a farmer who gave me shelter to hide,
fed, clothed me, contacted my mother and organized my escape back to Krakow. With
false documents I returned by train to my mother who within 24 hours sent me to
stay at an estate which was secretly part of the Polish underground army. The
captain gave me a room to stay which was his radio room, he said in the
evenings he will be listening to messages from the front lines on the foreign
radio. I was tasked to write messages and deliver them around the village every
morning. I was involved with publishing and distributing newspapers. I quickly
became a commander of a sabotage group at a Home Army outpost in Jastrzab, then
I had an arsenal under my care. We built a bunker for a library of our publications.
The Home Army commissioned me to write a report of the escape from Auschwitz
because I was one of few who knows what happened at Auschwitz and who survived
it, it was written in 1942, full of euphoria of regaining freedom and the
weapons to make the fight. After liberation I wrote many books, made many
television reports and visited with many people from the wartime effort. My dreams
have haunted me for 50 years, I always dream of suffocating during my fight to
escape, that the tunnels are narrowing narrowing, and I’ve used the last of my
strength to get free.
