Joseph Kolek, holocaust survivor of Poland. My father and I went into hiding with the partisans in the woods around the city of Lublin. My mother stayed in a village in hiding. I was in a troop for sabotage operations against trains, bridges, roadways. We killed Germans and destroyed lists of names of wanted persons. I worked also as a mail courier at the post office. I would carry all letters addressed to the gestapo into the woods and the partisans read it before I returned to town and deliver the mail. Another postman from a neighbor town asked me to cover his post for one day, I was interrogated by German SS and sent to Majdanek concentration camp, and worked there collecting the clothing of the people who went into the gas chambers to be murdered. We escaped from a sub-camp because many prisoners secretly built a tunnel to escape. I returned to the partisans, our last action was July 1944 defending a small place. Then some of the partisans moved west with the Russians to liberate Warsaw.
